Quick and slaked lime: what is the difference?
Lime is a general term for various calcium compounds widely used in construction, agriculture and other industries. There are two main types of lime: quicklime and slaked.
Quicklime (CaO), also known as calcium oxide, is a white crystalline substance obtained by burning limestone at high temperatures. It is very caustic and upon contact with water releases heat and reacts with the formation of slaked lime.
Slaked lime (Ca(OH)2), also known as calcium hydroxide, is a white powder or paste obtained by slaking quicklime with water. This process is called slaking because it reduces the causticity of quicklime. Slaked lime is less caustic than quicklime and has a wide range of uses including:
Building materials: as a binder in plaster, concrete and mortar
Agriculture: as a neutralizer of soil acidity and a source of calcium for plants
Water purification: to remove impurities from water
Disinfection: to kill bacteria and fungi
It is important to choose the right type of lime for a specific application. Quicklime should be used with caution due to its caustic properties, and quicklime is a safer alternative for most applications.
